Recap - Residência Lula Pena

Lula Pena was in residence at Castro Marim during the second half of January 2023, under the scope of Filho Único's artistic curation, partner of the Particular Universal Project.

Lula Pena is a singer, guitarist, composer and Portuguese interpreter, shared treasure among all lusophones at heart, and author of a fascinating approach to global folk music, established in a singular artistic expression that weaves various diverse traditions of music, sound and poetry.

To conclude the residency, Lula presented her "research and composition in real time of a poetic-acoustic-instant for Strings", on the 28th of January at Centro Multiusos do Azinhal.

We had the chance to talk to Lula about the importance of artistic residencies, the symbiosis of collaborating with the natural world, and her recent connection with the lyre.

Maria Reis in residence

Maria Reis is the final artist in residence at Castro Marim under curation from Filho Único, one of the partners of the Particular Universal project.

Her solo discography includes “A Flor da Urtiga” (2021), in collaboration with the notable Panda Bear (from Animal Collective) and “Chove na Sala, Água nos Olhos” (2019), beyond the indisputable legacy of Pega Monstro, a band that she shared with her sister Julia Reis for nearly a decade. In 2022, she released “Benefício da Dúvida”, and toured it all over the country since then, helping further cement Maria’s place as one of the most singular songwriters in Portugal, moving with ease between pop, rock, experimentation and a very unique way of being Portuguese in plain 21st century - bringing into her urban living archaic forms associated with the countryside that fall into place, within her vivid lyrics, bringing new possibilities of feeling and meaning.

Maria Reis will be in residence in the small village of Odeleite, starting March 15th, developing new songs, and plays a concert on the 24th, at the beautiful Church of Odeleite.

Signe Lidén in residence

The next artist in residence at Castro Marim as part of NyMusikk’s curation is the Norwegian Signe Lidén.

Oslo-based Signe Lidén works with the connections between place, sensation and sound. Through sound recordings, instrument building and personal interactions, Signe approaches each place as part of geological, biological and atmospheric processes linked to social and economic relationships, creating sound installations, videos and performances, as well as sound essays and archives.

In her residency in Castro Marim, the artist proposes to focus in particular on the subterranean and subaquatic sounds of the region, using a self-constructed instrument and special microphones to capture the resonances and vibrations caused by the tides and ocean currents throughout the territory of Castro Marim.

The artist will present her practice on the 28th of February, in a session at Mercado Municipal. At the end of the residency, the subterranean sounds will be unveiled at a public showcase at Auditório da Biblioteca Municipal de Castro Marim, on the 10th of March.

She talked with experts, recorded the most diverse sounds and hosted, on the 17th of December, a soundwalk by the natural reserve where she shared details about her work and promoted exercises of active listening.
