Recap - Maria Reis residency

Maria Reis was the final artist in residence at Castro Marim under the artistic curation from Filho Único, one of the partners of the Particular Universal project, where she stayed in residence at the small village of Odeleite, starting March 15th, where she wrote brand new songs and played them at a concert on the 24th, at the beautiful Church of Odeleite.

We talked to Maria about her writing process, her shift from electric to acoustic guitar, as well as the new compositions she wrote during her stay in Castro Marim, including one song about a salt worker who takes revenge on his boss.

chica and bá alvares in residence

Selected via the open call launched earlier this year, the collaborative project from singer-songwriter chica and bá alvares, double-bass player and key figure of some of the most fertile and diverse musical scenes in Lisbon, seeks to grapple, in Castro Marim, the problematics of “society’s undesirables”, an expression utilized by the Estado Novo to define punishment by exile over decades of repression in the not so distant past.

Following previous research work and interviews focused on this historical question, chica and bá alvares will develop new songs and lyrics based on the resources generated from this investigation - creating a dialogue with past and present lives, in a sharing of ‘despair’, which, as is often said, is “the essence of protest songs”. These new songs of sorrow will be presented live at Velho Cavalinho - Taberna Medieval, on the afternoon of the 24th of June (6PM), in a concert where admission is free to all.

Recap - Signe Lidén residency

Signe Lidén was in residency at Castro Marim between the 25th of February to the 11th of March, under the artistic curation of NyMusikk, partner of the Particular Universal project.

In her residency in Castro Marim, the artist proposed to focus in particular on the subterranean and subaquatic sounds of the region, using a self-constructed instrument and special microphones to capture the resonances and vibrations caused by the tides and ocean currents throughout the territory of Castro Marim.

The artist will presented her practice and the work she would develop on the 28th of February, in a session at Mercado Municipal. At the end of the residency, the subterranean sounds were unveiled at a public showcase at Auditório da Biblioteca Municipal de Castro Marim, on the 10th of March.

New residencies at Castro Marim

New batch of artistic residencies in Castro Marim.

In May, the Particular Project receives three new artists in Castro Marim. Curated by our project partner NyMusikk, and their last representative, arrives Therese Næss Diesena Norwegian sound designer who will present a composition based on the municipality’s soundscape, which will be presented to the public under the scope of Catavento - Encontro de Artes e Agroecologia's lineup, on the 5th of May at Quinta da Fornalha, in partnership with Associação Catavento, who is organising the event.

Next up, two more artists selected from the Open Call we held in January: first, David Ole from Porto, a musician who proposes to write a composition to be interpreted by the Banda Musical Castromarinense, which will be partially revealed to the public on the 13th of May, by the composer and band, at Auditório da Biblioteca Municipal de Castro Marim.

The second artist in residence this month, also selected through the Open Call, is the Spanish Clara Cortes Garcia, who will continue her research of over a decade on the subject of water, recording sounds and images tracing the natural forms and contours found along the Guadiana, the Atlantic and the Odeleite and Beliche dams, transforming and manipulating them creatively. The final work will be presented as an audiovisual installation, at Casa do Sal, with its inauguration on the 31st of May at 5PM, available to visit until the 11th of June.

Antonina Nowacka in residence

Antonina Nowacka in residence

Antonina Nowacka is a vocalist, composer and a sound poet from Warsaw, Poland. Her main interests as an artist oscillate around subjects such as organic sound synthesis, abstract narration, minimalism, symbolism and surrealism, soundscapes and reverberation, the nature of sound, particularly how the sound can influence the nervous system and the ways that music can put the performer and audience in a specific, dream-like mindset. She uses the voice as the most organic synthesizer and a primary tool of creation, involving extended vocal techniques, folk and eastern culture influenced vocal practices, space resonances as well as various forms of sound processing and synthesis in creating minimalistic, imaginative soundscapes.

In her residency in Castro Marim, to which she applied via the Open Call we launched in January, Antonina will interpret the poetry of the region’s birds’ “dreams”, by imagining a sound and musical language capable of translating those unknown, oneiric worlds. She will present her work in the shape of a walking show at Quinta da Fornalha (where she’ll take up residence), at 6pm on April 28th.

Jiska Huizing in residence

Jiska Huizing in residence

Jiska Huizing is a Dutch artist, musician and DJ living and working in Oslo, Norway.

Their artistic practice is a reflection on the world’s coexisting realities; how everything is relative and in constant change. Working with media such as sound, photography, books, drawing, text and hikes, they create work that contains a sense of searching and of wandering, and that questions how we perceive our surroundings. Walking is important in their practice, both as a concept and a working method.

Currently, Huizing is working on a new artist audiobook, focused on how we orient ourselves and with this project in mind, they will concentrate on the relations between places during the residency; how places resonate in and with each other. Using walking and field recording as working methods, they will visit a range of spaces and sites in and around Castro Marim, both alone and together with others.

As part of their residency, Huizing will hold a workshop in soundmap making, on April 22nd at 3pm at the Moinho das Pernadas (Pernadas watermill) in Odeleite.

Participation is free (the indicative minimum age is 12 yo) and there’s no need to sign up beforehand - just show up at the Moinho das Pernadas.

Recap - As Vozes das Memórias

Since March 2022, Teatro do Vestido has spent time in the Castro Marim municipality, observing, listening and studying. Searching to map out the territory, its people and their stories, the team wishes to contribute to a community archives of memories “small and forgotten”, accompanying the effort of local cooperatives in doing so.

The workshop “Resgatar Memórias, Inscrever Memórias” registers itself in this project of contributing to the artistic self-reflexion concerning the territory. Over the course of five days - between the 13th and 17th of February - the team comprising Teatro do Vestido - Joana Craveiro, Estêvão Antunes and Tânia Guerreiro - accompanied by the historian Alice Samara, worked with artists, investigators, teachers, art students and people generally interested in documentary research, to create artistic objects from ethnographic observations, by gathering life stories, objects, documents, as well as observing the landscape and the memories that reside in there.
